CAREERS
Choosing a Career
with so many options available...
Most people spend between 8-10 hours per day at work, so its really important to choose a job that
provides the job satisfaction and benefits that are best for you. But, with so many avenues, it can
sometimes be tricky to know where to look. In this article, we explore steps that can be taken to help you
decide
Make a mind map
A mind map gives you a good way to see all your
thoughts and ideas laid out right in front of you.
Start with the main idea like "Career Change" and
let it branch out into all sorts of related topics. You
might have one branch for your strengths and
skills that can transfer to something new, and
another for industries you're curious about and
potential job roles. You can even add branches for
things like what education you might need,
networking chances, wages etc. This setup not
only helps you sort through your thoughts and
spot connections you might’ve missed, but it also
sparks new ideas and strategies. Using a mind
map, you can clear things up, plan your move
better, and tackle your career shift in a fresh and
creative mind.
Prioritise your wants and needs
Your wants and needs are all about what you value
at work and in life. Your next job isn’t just going to
pay the bills and give you some perks—it’s also
going to eat up quite a bit of your time.
Jot down a list that includes:
Salary
Benefits
Personal fulfilment
Opportunities for personal or professional
growth
Then, take a look at each item and think about
what you need from it and what your dream
situation would be. After that, rank the list from
most to least important. Finally, check this list
against what you’ve found out about the career
paths you’re thinking about.
Take a personality test
Your personality is super important when picking
the right career path. There are lots of personality
tests that are designed to specifically support with
understanding & learning about yourself. Here are
some to look at:
Myers-Briggs Type indicator
The Birkman Method
Keirsey Temperament Sorter
HIGH5 Test
