REVISE: What is an Adverse Childhood Experience?
ACEs are potentially traumatic events that happen before the age of 18 and can
have lasting effects on a person9s development, health and wellbeing. The
original ACEs study, carried out in the 1990s, identified ten core ACEs in three
categories: abuse (physical, emotional or sexual), neglect (physical or emotional)
and household dysfunction (witnessing domestic violence, substance misuse,
mental illness in the household, parental separation or divorce, or having an
incarcerated family member). Research shows that the more ACEs someone
experiences, the higher their risk of negative outcomes such as chronic health
conditions, mental health problems, substance misuse, lower educational
attainment, and poorer social outcomes. Protective factors like supportive
relationships, community help, and early intervention can build resilience and
reduce harm from ACEs. Trauma-informed practice focuses on recognising signs
of trauma and responding with compassion, and many organisations now aim to
prevent ACEs by supporting families and helping individuals heal through safe
environments and strong connections. Read more about ACEs:

Self
Reflection
When was the last time you really reflected on
things? Do you just wait for your annual appraisal or
do you actively seek feedback and look inwards to
improve? Ask yourself the following questions and
really think. Reflect on them in 6 months’ time and
consider what changes there have been in that
period. You might surprise yourself!
What went well this year?
What skills did I improve on most this year?
What skills have I struggled with?
What would I like to do differently next year?
How am I managing stress? Do I do it well?
Can I think of a time when I felt inspired?
In what ways have I connected with others?
How have I grown professionally this year?
How have I grown personally this year?
What am I looking forward to next year?
What was the best thing to have happened this
year?
The UK Government has said
the voting age will be reduced to
16 for all elections by the next
general election. Are you
registered to vote? Make sure
you are to have your say! Our
democratic right is an important
principle in British Values. Make
your opinion count.

From September 2025, new changes to the EYFS will strengthen
safeguarding and improve daily practice in early years settings.
Providers will need to get clear references for new staff and
update safeguarding policies to show how suitability checks are
done. They must also include clear whistleblowing procedures
so staff feel safe to raise concerns.
Settings must follow up quickly on unexplained absences and
have more than two emergency contacts for each child.
Mealtimes will also have stricter rules: there must be a qualified
first aider present, allergies must be carefully managed, and
staff should watch children closely to prevent choking.
Toileting and nappy changing must protect children9s privacy but
still keep them safe, so clear policies are needed. A new Annex C
sets out minimum standards for safeguarding training, which
must be renewed at least every two years. Also, students,
trainees, and long-term volunteers over 16 must have valid
paediatric first aid if they count in ratios.
Some terms are changing too - 8lead practitioner9 will now be
called the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). Read more
about the changes on page 27.
