Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Updates –
September 2025
From September 2025, all Early Years settings
and providers must follow the updated Early
Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework. The
EYFS is the statutory framework in England that
sets the standards for learning, development,
and care for children from birth to 5 years old.
The primary focus of the update is to strengthen
safeguarding practices. More on page 27!

Expansion of Free Childcare Entitlements
From September 2025, eligible working
parents in England with children aged 9
months to school age will be able to access
up to 30 free childcare hours per week over
38 weeks (1,140 hours annually). This
completes the government’s multi-year
expansion plan. This is a major cost relief for
parents, but may result in increased pressure
on nurseries.

School-Based Nurseries
Funding has been approved for 300 new schoolbased nurseries, providing thousands of
additional childcare places across England from
September 2025. These nurseries operate within
existing primary schools, offering parents the
convenience of easier drop-offs and pick-ups.
Provision will vary by setting. Some nurseries will
cater to children aged 3–4, while others may also
accommodate younger children.
