Key aims when working with people using abusive behaviours
When working with people who use abusive behaviours the primary goal is to increase the safety and well-being of the
survivors, and any children involved. It is important to take all reasonable steps to make sure the support offered does
not exacerbate or generate additional risks for survivors and their children. Behaviour change interventions help hold
individuals accountable for their behaviours and puts the onus on the person causing harm rather than the survivors.
They teach skills to encourage non-abusive communication, conflict resolution, and emotional regulation with the aim
to break the cycle of abusive behaviours and reduce harm to current or future partners and children.
How we can hold people using abusive behaviours accountable?
Holding people using abusive behaviours accountable is a critical part of ensuring that abuse does not continue or
escalate. This can be achieved by creating a safe non-judgemental environment for individuals to disclosure abusive
