AI and the Future Job Market
It feels like there are two sides to the whole AI debate. Some people are all in and super excited about it, whilst others
are worried about factors like data and privacy risks and the possibility of AI taking over our jobs. Plus, there are those
who just want nothing to do with tech at all! But let's face it, AI isn't going anywhere. It's only going to keep growing
and becoming an even bigger part of our everyday lives, but how may it impact future job roles?
What is AI?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a
branch of computer science
focused on creating systems that
perform tasks requiring humanlike intelligence. AI uses
algorithms and data to analyse
patterns, enabling machines to
make predictions and decisions
while improving over time.
Essentially, AI allows machines to
think and learn independently,
completing tasks without constant
human input. While impressive, AI
can also be perceived as
intimidating. Examples of AI
include Siri, Alexa, ChatGPT, selfdriving cars, chatbots, and FaceID.
Will some jobs not exist in the future?
It is impossible to say which jobs will and won’t exist in the future, because we just
don’t know; but advances in automation and AI do allow for certain predictions to be
made. Jobs that are most vulnerable are those that depend on tasks that can be
automated or streamlined through technological innovations. Examples of these jobs
are; Data entry and data software, Manual software testing, telemarketing roles, fast
food workers,
How is AI changing job roles?
AI is definitely not all bad and over the past few years, it has been used to transform
jobs and careers. Examples of where AI augment jobs include:
Doctors: AI helps with diagnosis, but humans still make decisions and
communicate with patients.
Lawyers: AI can analyse legal documents quickly, but strategy and negotiation
remain human.
Writers, designers, marketers: AI can generate drafts or visuals, but creativity and
nuance still matter.
Teachers: AI might personalise learning, but human connection and mentorship
are irreplaceable.
How does AI impact Childcare?
Did you know...
AI has been around for much longer than you may think. The
powerful AI tools we use today have origins in computing
developments over the last 70 years, from code breakers in the
Second World War to the very first pattern-recognition networks in
the 1950's.
At its core, Childcare is about meaningful human interaction. Sure, AI can help out in some areas, but it’s not going to replace
practitioners anytime soon. Let’s explore how AI is starting to influence childcare and what it might mean going forward.
These tools that can support but not replace Childcare:
Smart monitoring systems: Powered cameras can alert staff to unsafe behaviour or unusual activity
Scheduling & admin: Automating tasks like parent communication, nappy change/fed tracking
What AI cannot do:
Emotional support & attachment: Children need affection, empathy & emotional responsiveness
Handling behaviours: Tantrums & trauma responses require human judgement and patience
Cultural & social development: Teaching and embedding the British values happens through examples and social experiences
Communication: Building trust parents and other caregivers is a human job
