Early Years Foundation Stage 2026
The updated Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
statutory framework applies from 1st September
2026. It sets the standards that all early years
providers must follow to ensure children learn,
develop, and are kept healthy and safe. The
updated framework covers safeguarding and
welfare
requirements,
staff
responsibilities,
learning
and
development,
and
suitable
arrangements for supporting children’s individual
needs. All early years staff should be familiar with
the updated requirements and ensure their
practice reflects the changes.
Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026
The updated Keeping Children Safe in Education
(KCSIE) comes into force on 1st September 2026. It
sets out statutory safeguarding guidance for Early
Years settings, schools and colleges in England,
covering responsibilities for protecting children
from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and other forms
of harm including online risks. The updated
guidance strengthens expectations around
safeguarding
practice,
safer
recruitment,
information sharing and staff responsibilities. All
staff should understand their safeguarding duties,
recognise signs of abuse, and know how to report
concerns through their safeguarding procedures.
Screen Time in Early Years
From 1st September 2026, settings should take a
precautionary approach to screen use, avoiding
screens for children under 2 except in exceptional
circumstances, limiting use for children aged 2-5.
Screens should be used purposefully to support
learning and development with adults actively
engaging with children, and should not replace
play, physical activity, sleep or face-to-face
interaction.
