PREVENT DUTY
The current National threat level in the UK is:
SUBSTANTIAL
This means the threat of a terrorist attack in the UK is
currently assessed as likely.
Prevent Duty
Understanding values, beliefs and the Prevent Duty
We all have beliefs. They influence what we think is right and wrong, how we treat other people,
the decisions we make and how we understand the world around us. But here's a harder question:
Do you know where yours came from?
What Shapes You?
Our values and beliefs don't appear from nowhere. They develop throughout our lives and can be
influenced by family, friends, culture, religion, education, experiences, community, news, social
media, people we admire, and so much more. Some beliefs are things we've consciously thought
about and decided for ourselves, whereas others may have been around us for so long that we've
never really questioned them. Understanding this isn't about deciding that your beliefs are wrong.
It's about developing the self-awareness to recognise why you think the way you do.
Belief Isn't the Problem
The Prevent Duty aims to help protect people from becoming involved in terrorism or supporting
terrorist ideologies. That doesn't mean people shouldn't have strong opinions, political views,
religious beliefs or passionately support causes. In a democratic society, people are allowed to
think differently, question things and disagree. The concern comes when extremist ideas promote
or justify things such as violence, hatred or intolerance, or when somebody is being manipulated
towards terrorism. One of the things that can help protect us is critical thinking.
Challenge Your Thinking
Test yourself by asking the following questions!
Would I believe this as quickly if it supported the opposite viewpoint?
What do I believe and why do I believe it?
Who or what has influenced that belief?
What evidence would make me reconsider it?
Have I genuinely listened to people who think differently?
Can I disagree without disrespecting them?
