DIGITAL SKILLS &
SAFETY
Did you see what we did
there?
Back on Page 11, 8Emily9 shared a Day in the Life (DITL) similar to what we see on
Instagram and TikTok. What many people don9t realise is how much personal
information this shares and the risk it poses to your digital and personal safety.
Let9s review this together. 8Emily9
walks to work, which she says is
within a 20-minute radius of the
nursery she works at, 8Little Stars9.
From the image of the street, a local
person could work out where this is
in relation to the nursery to find
where she lives or where Little Stars
is. We know she leaves the house at
7:30am, giving someone a time and
location to find her. We know she
works with 8Amy9, which also begins
to give some of Amy9s personal
information out, even if that wasn9t
the intention. We know 8Emily9 goes
to the gym 3 times a week - she
even gives us the gym9s name and
there9s a clock on the wall which
tells us when she9s there. She tells
us about her boyfriend who she met
in school and that they started
dating when they left, which places
her around 16 years old. We can see
the cafe9s name so can work out
which town she works in. This is also
identified by her photo of the bus
which gives us a route number and
location to help narrow down where
8Emily9 lives.
So let9s summarise what we know from 5 simple images: 8Emily9s9 name, place of
work, where she lives, her routine, where she goes to the gym, her age.
From this, we could also easily work out where she is and when. We could find
her surname - a simple Google could bring up her name on the nursery9s
website, or a search through the Cafe9s Instagram page could bring up a photo
8Emily9 tagged them in, giving us her username (and account if it9s not private).
Some account names also include dates of birth or images on their birthday. We
know when she left school, so it9s not hard to work out a date of birth.
The character 8Emily9, her colleague 8Amy9, and the nursery 8Little Stars9 were all
entirely fictional for the purpose of this article; the images are all stock images
and do not relate to a person or place at all. What9s important to take away here is
that we don9t always know who is viewing our personal information or if they may
have nefarious means. Though thankfully rare, this could lead to stolen identities,
fraud, and even a risk of stalking and other harm.
So, whether you9re 16 or 60, stay vigilant online and be careful with
what you share - you never know who9s looking.
