CHILD
DEVELOPMENT
bENEFITS OF
sENSORY PLAY
Baby sensory play is a wonderful way to stimulate a baby's
senses and support their development. Here are some key
benefits and activities you can try!
Please note: always ensure that the materials are safe, nontoxic, and suitable for the baby’s age. Sensory play should be
supervised, especially with smaller items that could pose a
choking hazard.
Activities
Benefits
Texture Exploration: Fill a bin with various
materials like rice, pasta, sand, or water. Let
the baby touch, grab, and explore different
textures.
Cognitive Development: Engaging with
different textures, colours, and sounds helps
babies learn about their environment and
develop problem-solving skills.
Sensory Bottles: Create bottles filled with
water, glitter, beads, or small toys. Seal
tightly and let the baby shake and watch the
contents move.
Motor Skills: Sensory play encourages fine
and gross motor skills as babies grasp,
squeeze, and manipulate various objects.
Bubble Play: Blow bubbles and let the baby
try to catch or pop them. This activity
combines visual stimulation with motor
skills.
Language Development: As caregivers
describe the sensory experiences, babies
start to recognise words and sounds,
boosting their language skills.
Nature Walks: Go outside and let the baby
feel leaves, grass, or flowers. Talk about the
different textures and smells.
Emotional
Development:
Exploring
different sensory materials can help babies
express their feelings and learn to selfsoothe.
Sound Exploration: Use rattles, bells, or
musical instruments. Encourage the baby to
shake or tap them to create sounds.
Social Skills: When participating in sensory
activities with others, babies learn to
interact, share, and communicate.
