phrases and terms we often come across when
talking all things Prevent Duty!
Channel: A voluntary, multi-agency safeguarding programme
that supports vulnerable individuals. It provides early
intervention, similar to other safeguarding processes.
British Values: Democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty,
and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and
beliefs.
Extremism: Vocal or active opposition to fundamental British
values.
Far-Right Extremism: Ideologies and movements that often
combine ultra-nationalism, racism, anti-immigration views,
and authoritarian beliefs, sometimes to promote violence.
GORE Core: An online subculture that shares or glorifies
extreme graphic violence. Some gore-focused communities
overlap with extremist spaces where violent content is used
to desensitise, shock, or recruit individuals.
Incel: Involuntary Celibate - an online subculture of mostly
men who describe themselves as unable to form romantic or
sexual relationships. In its more extreme forms, Incel ideology
can promote misogyny, fatalism, and in rare cases
justification of violence against women.
Manosphere: A network of online communities focused on
men’s issues, masculinity, and gender politics. Some promote
misogyny, hostility toward women, and in some cases
extremist narratives.
Misandry: Hatred, prejudice, or discrimination against males.
While less commonly linked to extremist movements,
extreme anti-male narratives can contribute to grievancebased identity ideologies online.
Misogyny: Hatred, prejudice, or discrimination against
females. Misogyny may become a concern where it moves
beyond harmful attitudes into extremist ideology, violence
endorsement, or organised hate movements.
Nationalism: A belief in strong identification with and loyalty to
one’s nation. Nationalism is not inherently extremist. However,
it can become extremist when it promotes racial superiority,
exclusion, or hostility towards other groups.
Online Echo Chamber: A digital environment where
individuals are exposed mainly to information and opinions
that reinforce their existing beliefs.
Prevent Duty: A legal duty under the Counter-Terrorism and
Security Act 2015 that requires organisations to identify,
assess, and reduce the risk of radicalisation.
Prevent Strategy: One of the four strands of the UK
government’s counter-terrorism strategy, CONTEST (Prevent,
Pursue, Protect, Prepare).
Radicalisation: The process by which a person comes to
adopt extremist beliefs, ideologies, or actions that may lead
them to support terrorism.
Terrorism: The use or threat of serious violence or harm
designed to influence the government or intimidate the public
for political, religious, or ideological purposes.
Toxic Masculinity: Cultural norms around masculinity that
promote dominance, emotional suppression, aggression, and
control.
White Supremacy: An extremist ideology that claims white
people are superior to other racial groups and should
dominate society. It is rooted in racism and has been linked to
far-right extremist movements.
