TRAVELLING WITHOUT PARENTS
THE ULTIMATE SAFETY & TIPS GUIDE
Travelling alone or with friends for the first time without parents can feel exciting and a little scary. However, travel is
one of the best ways to learn about the world and yourself. With the right preparation and a few smart tips, you can
stay safe, feel confident, and enjoy every moment of your adventure. Here’s a complete guide to help you plan, stay
safe, and make the most of your first trip without your parents.
Before You Go
Plan your itinerary – Before you travel, take time to
understand where you’ll be staying, how you’ll get there,
and what you plan to do once you arrive. Read recent
hotel reviews to get a sense of cleanliness, overall safety,
and how staff treat guests. Think about the amenities that
matter most to you, such as reliable Wi-Fi, and try to book
a place that offers flexible cancellation too.
Pack smart – Bring essential documents like passport, ID
and tickets, and don’t forget chargers, money, medication
and some local cash. You could also pack a small first aid
kit with painkillers, plasters and medication.
Pre-travel checks – Tell your bank you are going abroad
and check for foreign transaction fees; some debit cards
are available for international travel, such as the Post
Office. Research visas, vaccinations, and check power
outlets, ensuring you bring a universal adaptor if needed.
Stay connected – Share your plans with someone you
trust, and save emergency contacts and accommodation
info on your phone. Check with your network regarding
roaming fees, especially for mobile data!
Organise travel insurance – Buy insurance or check if
your bank offers it. Make sure it covers medical
emergencies, cancellations and lost belongings. Save a
copy of your policy and emergency contacts.

in, go through security and find your gate without stress.
Follow airport signs, check departure boards for changes,
and keep your passport and boarding pass handy.
At your accommodation – Lock your door properly, learn
emergency exits and how to leave quickly in case of an
emergency. Make sure you tell family members/ friends
where you are staying.
Booking activities – Book activities safely through your
hotel, reputable travel agencies, visitor centres or wellreviewed online platforms. Avoid street offers or random
