REASSIGNMENT
This refers to someone’s age or
age group (e.g. "people over 50",
"young adults"). It's unlawful to
discriminate against someone
because of their age unless it can
be objectively justified (e.g., for
safety or eligibility reasons).
This includes physical or mental
impairments that have a
substantial and long-term impact
on a person’s ability to carry out
day-to-day activities. Employers
and service providers have a duty
to make reasonable adjustments
to ensure accessibility.
This protects people who are
transgender, meaning they are
undergoing, have undergone, or
intend to undergo a process to
change their gender. The law
applies regardless of whether they
have had any medical treatment or
not.

MARRIAGE & CIVIL
PARTNERSHIP
RACE
This protects people who are
pregnant, on maternity leave, or
have recently had a baby. They
cannot be treated unfairly because
of pregnancy, childbirth, or
maternity-related leave.
People who are married or in a civil
partnership are protected from
discrimination in employment.
(Note: This doesn’t apply to goods
or services in the same way as the
other characteristics.)

SEXUAL
ORIENTATION
This covers religious beliefs (e.g.,
Christianity, Islam, Judaism, etc.),
as well as non-religious beliefs
such as humanism or atheism. It
also protects people from being
forced to follow a belief.
This refers to being male or
female. The law protects against
discrimination in all aspects of life
– including pay, promotion,
education, and services – based on
someone’s sex.
This protects individuals who are
lesbian, gay, bisexual, or
heterosexual. Discrimination
because of who someone is
attracted to is unlawful, whether
it's at work, school, or in public.
This includes colour, nationality,
ethnic or national origin.
Discrimination based on race can
include both direct actions (e.g.,
refusing service) and indirect
practices (e.g., rules that
disadvantage certain racial
groups).
