Revise English: Apostrophes
Apostrophes have TWO jobs: to demonstrate missing letters OR to
show possession. You should never use an apostrophe for plurals.
The Rules
It ends in an S: Jess’,
students’
The dogs ball is red
Were going to win
The dog’s ball is red
Wear going to win
The dogs’ ball is red
We’re going to win
(this is actually because there’s a
missing letter, i.e. Jess’s)
Answer: the dog’s ball is red
Possession
One person or thing
owns something: Tom’s
Answer: we’re going to win
Missing Letters
Use an apostrophe
where letters are
missing:
It is = it’s
Do not = don’t
You are = you’re
We are = we’re

Divide by 4
e.g. 25% of 70 = 17.5
Divide by 4, x by 3
e.g. 75% of 70 = 17.5 x 3 = 52.5
Finding any percentage
Once you’ve found 10% or 1%,
you can then multiply to find
the answer.
For example:
What is 20% of 50?
10% = 5, so to find 20% we
need to multiply our answer
by 2 (10% x 2 = 20%). 5 x 2 =
10, so our answer is 10.
What is 42.5% of 30?
10% = 3
So, 40% = 3 x 4 = 12
1% = 0.3
So 2% = 0.3 x 2 = 0.6
and 0.5% = 0.3 / 2 = 0.15
42.5% = 12 + 0.6 + 0.15
Our answer is 12.75.
