Proving
your Identity
For many young people, everyday situations now require proof of age or identity. Whether it’s buying
age-restricted items, attending events, collecting parcels, or opening a bank account, having a
recognised form of ID makes life simpler. Yet for many individuals, especially teens, those who don’t
travel abroad or aren’t ready to drive, the usual options of a passport or a provisional driving licence
may not be available. The good news is that there are several accessible, affordable alternatives
designed specifically for young people.
Your ID Matters!
Even before turning 18, individuals are often expected to verify who they are. This can
include:
Proving age for retail purchases (e.g. energy drinks, games, or lottery tickets)
Entering venues or events with age restrictions
Verifying identity for work experience, part-time jobs, or apprenticeships
Accessing services such as banking or mobile phone contracts
Without ID, young people can find themselves excluded from everyday opportunities
or relying on others to vouch for them.
Option 1: PASS Scheme
Cards
One of the most recognised alternatives!
Cards carrying the PASS hologram are
accepted across the UK as valid proof of
age. PASS-accredited cards include
providers such as Validate UK and
CitizenCard.
Affordable (often around £10–£20), easy
to apply for online, and accepted by
retailers, pubs, and other venues.
Option 2: Digital Identity
Alongside physical cards, digital identity
is becoming more common. Apps such
as Yoti allow users to verify their age and
identity securely using a smartphone.
Key features include:
Secure storage of ID details
Age verification without sharing
full personal information
No need to carry physical ID
While digital ID is still gaining recognition,
it offers a flexible option.
