100 Ideas for Early Years
Practitioners: Observation,
Assessment & Planning Marianne Sargent

The NSPCC emphasises the importance of using precise and
sensitive language when discussing sibling sexual behaviour and
abuse. Terms like "sibling sexual abuse," "incest," "harmful sexual
behaviour (HSB)," and "sibling sexual trauma" are often used, but
they lack
universally agreed
definitions.
Misuse
or
misinterpretation of these terms can lead to professionals either
minimising the abusive nature of the behaviour or, conversely,
mislabelling children who have displayed harmful behaviour as
'abusers,' which can exacerbate feelings of shame and hinder
recovery.
The NSPCC advocates for a nuanced approach that accurately
describes the behaviour, context, and sibling dynamics, while
being sensitive to the impact language has on family members.
This approach helps ensure that responses are appropriate,
balanced, and supportive of all children and families involved.
