Revise English: Analysing Text
Understand the Text
Identify Key Points
Analyse Language
Before analysing, make sure you fully
understand what the text is about. Ask
yourself: What is the topic? Who is the author
or speaker? Who is the audience? What is
the purpose? (To inform, persuade, entertain,
explain…). Look at the title, headings, and
first/last paragraphs for clues.
Highlight or note the main ideas and
supporting details. Main ideas are what the
text is mostly about. Supporting details give
examples, facts, or explanations. E.g. Text
about recycling: Main idea = Recycling helps
the environment; supporting details =
Reduces waste, saves energy etc.
Look at the words and techniques the writer
uses to affect the reader, e.g. adjectives,
repetition, rhetorical questions, facts/
statistics, persuasive language etc. Ask
