EMPLOYERS &
COMMUNITY
JURY DUTY
What to Expect When
You’re Called for Jury Duty
Jury service is one of the key ways citizens participate
in the UK justice system, but for many, it9s a complete
mystery. Serving allows ordinary citizens to participate
in the justice system and helps ensure trials are fair.
Your role as a juror is essential in deciding the
outcome of a case.
How are jurors chosen?
How long does jury service last?
Names are selected at random from the electoral
register. This ensures that juries reflect the local
community. Not everyone who receives a
summons will end up serving on a case.
Most cases last a few days, though some can go
on for weeks. Your summons will give an estimate,
but it depends on the trial.
What happens if I get a jury summons?
You won9t receive a salary for jury service, but you
can claim compensation for lost earnings. Certain
expenses, such as travel costs or parking, can also
be reimbursed.
You9ll receive a letter in the post telling you where
and when to attend court. You must respond
within seven days to confirm whether you can go.
Ignoring the summons could lead to fines or other
penalties.
Can I be excused from jury duty?
Yes you can be excused or have your service
postponed if you have a valid reason. This might
include illness, being on holiday, or work
commitments. The court considers each request
individually.
What should I expect on my first day?
When you arrive at court, you9ll go through
security and be directed to a 8jurors only9 room,
where you may wait for minutes, hours, or even
days before being called for a trial. Once your
name is announced, you9ll be led into a courtroom.
From there, a further selection process takes
place, reducing the group to a final jury of 12.
Will I be paid?
What should I wear?
Smart-casual clothing is best. Comfortable shoes
are recommended since you may spend time
walking or waiting in courtrooms.
Can I take breaks during the trial?
Yes. Courts schedule regular breaks for meals and
rest. You9ll also have opportunities to ask questions
if you9re unclear about procedures.
Is jury service stressful?
It can be challenging, especially when listening to
complex evidence, but many jurors find it
interesting and rewarding. Court staff are there to
guide you throughout the process.
